About Joan ...
Joan Tornow has been an educator throughout her career. She has taught in a variety of schools both in the U.S. and abroad. She is the author of "Every Child is a Writer" and has observed "best practices" around the globe. She created this site to share some aspects of her vision for schools that engage young writers. The goal is to engage writers in authentic writing and thinking projects and explorations.
Website's Goal
Without a vision, language arts programs become tedious for teachers and students. But, a vision is not enough. The nitty-gritty details need to be worked out and shared. The purpose of this website is to share a vision along with successful classroom practices that enable teachers and students to do their best work.

When children can choose topics that have personal meaning to them, they become invested in their work. Their learning is maximized.
